Soča Valley Day Trip: Vršič Pass, Emerald River & Waterfalls

Departing Ljubljana northward past Kranjska Gora and the crystal waters of Lake Jasna, the road begins its dramatic climb up Vršič Pass (Prelaz Vršič). Reaching a summit elevation of 1,611 meters (5,285 feet), it is the highest paved road pass in Slovenia, constructed under forced labor during World War I by thousands of Russian prisoners of war to supply the Austro-Hungarian front line against Italy.

Along Hairpin 8 stands the poignant Russian Chapel (Ruska kapelica)—a delicate wooden Orthodox shrine built by surviving prisoners in 1916 to commemorate over 300 comrades and Austro-Hungarian guards buried in a massive snow avalanche that swept down the slopes of Mount Mojstrovka. At the summit of the pass (Hairpin 25), travelers are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the soaring limestone pinnacles of Prisojnik and Jalovec before descending the 26 southern switchbacks into the wild Trenta Valley.

The Great Soča Gorge (Velika korita Soče): Located near the village of Soča, the river carves through a narrow limestone canyon 750 meters long and up to 15 meters deep, contracting at points to barely two meters wide. Wooden footbridges cross above turquoise pools where Soča marble trout hang suspended in the current. Kozjak Waterfall (Slap Kozjak): Situated near Kobarid, this mystical waterfall is hidden inside a colossal amphitheater-shaped underground cavern whose ceiling collapsed in antiquity. A flat, scenic 25-minute trail winds through pine woods and crosses a wooden suspension bridge, leading to wooden boardwalks hugging the rock wall. The waterfall plunges 15 meters through a dark vertical chimney into an extraordinary, glowing blue-green subterranean pool.
