Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle: Underground Train & Cliff Fortress

The visit begins at the underground train platform, where passengers board yellow open-air electric trains. As the train glides along 3.7 kilometers of subterranean tracks at brisk speed, passengers duck beneath low-hanging Gothic arches of calcite crystal and speed through vast caverns illuminated by dramatic atmospheric lighting.

Disembarking deep in the interior, an official cave guide leads visitors along a 1.5-kilometer paved walking trail with gentle gradients and non-slip surfaces. The route traverses the Great Mountain (Velika gora), crosses the Russian Bridge (built by Russian prisoners of war in 1916), and leads through the Tube Gallery and the Spaghetti Hall (hung with millions of needle-thin white stalactites).

The undisputed symbol of Postojna Cave is the Brilliant (Briljant)—a five-meter-tall, blindingly white limestone stalagmite formed by a continuous drip of mineral-rich water depositing pure calcite crystals over tens of thousands of years. Beside it stands an intricately carved reddish column, creating a striking geological contrast.

Located nine kilometers northwest of Postojna, Predjama Castle (Predjamski grad) is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest cave castle in the world. Built over eight centuries directly into the vertical mouth of a 123-meter limestone cliff, the fortress appears completely impregnable from the outside.

Its most celebrated historical inhabitant was the 15th-century rebel knight Erazem of Predjama (Erazem Lueger). Besieged by imperial Habsburg forces for over a year, Erazem survived comfortably by utilizing a secret natural vertical shaft—the Erazem Cave Tunnel—connecting the castle's upper ramparts directly to the Vipava Valley, allowing his servants to secretly bring in fresh cherries, roasted meats, and supplies while taunting the freezing soldiers outside.
