Lake Bohinj Day Trip: Glacial Wilderness, Vogel Cable Car & Savica

At Ukanc on the western end of the lake, the Vogel Cable Car (Žičnice Vogel) provides one of the most dramatic mountain ascents in Europe. The glass-walled pendulum cable car ascends nearly 1,000 vertical meters in approximately four minutes, skimming close to sheer limestone cliffs to reach the upper station at 1,535 meters above sea level.

Exiting at the mountain terrace reveals an extraordinary panoramic amphitheater: directly below lies the entire deep blue expanse of Lake Bohinj, while directly opposite across the valley soars the jagged, snow-streaked limestone pyramid of Mount Triglav (2,864m), Slovenia's highest mountain and sacred national symbol. From the upper station, chairlifts continue to high ridges, offering accessible summer hiking trails through alpine pastures where sheep graze among wild edelweiss and gentian flowers.

Four kilometers west of Ukanc, a mountain trail leads to Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica), one of Slovenia's most celebrated literary and natural landmarks. The Sava Bohinjka river emerges mysteriously from an underground karst cave high in the rock face, plunging 78 meters down an A-shaped double cascade into an emerald-green plunge pool. Famed Slovenian romantic poet France Prešeren immortalized this waterfall in his epic poem The Baptism on the Savica (Krst pri Savici). The ascent from the trailhead parking lodge involves approximately 550 well-maintained stone steps through shady beech woods, taking 20 to 25 minutes.

For hikers seeking solitude, the northern shore trail of Lake Bohinj is completely closed to vehicular traffic. A well-marked 12-kilometer circular path wraps around the shoreline, leading through quiet pebbled coves and over wooden footbridges where trout swim visibly in water so clear you can count the pebbles on the lakebed fifteen meters down.
